REMEMBRANCES
The Honolulu
Advertiser obituary is posted on
the door of Keller 204A at the University
of Hawaii at Manoa, along
with a full-size color picture. On the
picture a note reads, “Keller 204A was Art Chiu’s Office for many (many, many)
years. Art Chiu knew Art Keller, and had
an office in this building in 1959 when it opened. Dr. Chiu was always professional, animated,
emphatic, generous, and gregarious, and he will be missed by a multitude.”
Please send remembrances to Katherine, 1654 Paula Dr., Honolulu,

From JC, Singapore:
Arthur was a lovely character – a true Shanghai man, getting the most
out of life and contributing all of it back thru his family, his work and his
friends. We’ve lost a great pal, a
leading light, but the Guy up there has gained a unique citizen and in so
doing, Heaven may not be the same again.
It will also be a pleasant surprise for Irene [his younger sister who
died January 7, 2006]. Celebrating the
life of Arthur is so appropriate – that’s how he would like to be
remembered. That’s how his family has
sensed his wishes. That’s how his impact
on all those who were fortunate to have known him should be commemorated.
From MK, XE, Honolulu: Hawaii
has lost a great man, a great educator, and a dedicated mentor to many. His accomplishments and achievements will be
remembered for a very long time.
From ET, Honolulu: We were all saddened to hear the news of Dr.
Chiu’s passing. He was a great man who
made a difference for the better in this world.
Like many other professions and friends, I will miss him dearly.
From GC, ХЕ class of ’95, and KC in Sunnyvale: We will truly miss Dr. Chiu’s cheerfulness,
warmth, and above all his love and excitement for life.
From CM, XE, Waipahu: I have very fond memories of Dr. Chiu,
especially at your house during the Chi Epsilon parties. Dr. Chiu was a father figure to me. He was always available for advice. He will be greatly missed.
From TP, Missouri: I hope to continue in my life the kind of
dedication he showed for Chi Epsilon and all his students, and to us. We shall sincerely miss him.
From MP, Florida: I feel very honored to have served on several
committees with him over the years and will always remember him as a warm and
genuinely kind person who truly served his profession and made important contributions
to society. I will miss his great sense
of humor, and of course the chocolate-covered macadamia nuts he always brought
with him to meetings.
From Denise Eby Konan, Interim Chancellor, UH-Manoa: While I did not know Professor Arthur Chiu,
those who worked with him have spoken very highly of his contributions to
science and the university’s mission as a teaching, research, and service
entity. Their comments indicate that he
brought great distinction to the institution, and I know that the many, many
colleagues and students here who benefited from his counsel and expertise
remember him warmly.
From TG, Honolulu: I am so deeply grieved by Dr. Chiu’s
passing. Although he was never my
professor, I admired his passion in the engineering community, as well as his
involvement with the college and with Chi Epsilon…I will miss his one-of-a-kind
voice and his presence at the various seminars and events. Every time I saw him at a seminar or a dinner
function, there was a line of people waiting to talk to him. But he always found a way of conversing with
me and asking me how things were going.
From HD, Washington,
D.C.: It was with great sorrow that I read of
Arthur’s passing. During and after
Hurricane Iniki, he became an integral part of the FEMA/State mitigation
efforts as we developed materials that would help those affected by that
disaster to rebuild their lives and homes in a stronger, safer way. His vast knowledge, innovative ideas, and
great sense of humor were im- portant elements in that journey from destruction
to rebuilding . . . His legacy will be one of such endurance as he spread it
far and wide.
From Bangkok: Our EASEC founder has peacefully left us with
a fond memory of his kindness and objectiveness towards all 9 EASEC conferences
in the past, and the coming EASEC-10 in August 2006.
From CR, California: Art had a terrific heart, a keen interest in
natural hazard mitigation, and was a dedicated faculty member and professional
engineer. We will all miss him very
much.
From RA, Honolulu: I just saw him Friday night [right before the
stroke] at the UH College
of Engineering Reception
at Holmes Hall and had a nice chat with him…He was his normal friendly
self. I complimented him on what a great
picture of him in Mala- malama and the
great article in tribute to him. I’m all
choked up.
From ZM, Taipei: We regret deeply to learn the news that
Arthur has left us. He will always be
remembered as a great friend, colleague, and dear Uncle Arthur to the children.
From MZ, Seoul: Over
the last 8 years I had the privilege to get to know Arthur, my older brother,
my friend, my colleague, a good man, a gentleman, someone to look up to, a
great man . . . we became somewhat close.
A couple of years ago he came to my home and office for a couple of days
to work on HAZUS. My kids loved
him. Within a couple of days he made
such a lasting impact on them. He taught
them and me as well, how to properly cut a pineapple and plant one! Once a teacher, always a teacher. Ever since then, pineapple is the favorite
fruit in our household!
From YT, Japan: I was sorry and grieved to hear that
Professor Chiu passed away. No words can
express the deep sadness we feel. We
will always remember him with great affection.
From RW, Engineering Class ’58, Honolulu:
He was a teacher of all teachers and he inspired his students to
excellence
From YL, Australia: It was a tremendous shock to receive the sad
words about Arthur. I was in fact
looking forward to meeting Arthur again in Bangkok at the EASEC-10 in August. Arthur has been to me and all of his former
students an excellent teacher, a great supporter and a good colleague. He devoted his life and energies to the
structural engineering profession even to his last day. Arthur will live in our memory, forever.
From TC, Honolulu: Art was a very special and gifted
person. He will always be
remembered. Always enjoyed chatting with
him.
From CT, Maryland: We are saddened by the loss of our friend and
colleague – ART CHIU – a giant of a man!
From SLL, Singapore: I have just learned about the demise of
Arthur and would like to extend my deepest condolence. I had lunch with him during his recent visit
[December 2005-January 2006]; I am really shocked by his sudden passing as he
looked perfectly healthy to me.
From Washington,
D.C.: I am terribly sad for the passing of Art, and
have no words to describe the emptiness that follows his loss. Art had lived a rich life as he was
surrounded by a loving family. He
treated his friends with trust and total support, his institution with
undisputable loyalty, and had total devotion to his students. Yet, he was not concerned with what he’d get
in return for all that he had done to assist, mentor, and support others. I valued Art’s friendship greatly and appreciated
his trust, counsel and understanding over the decades. I’ll miss him greatly!
Plus many additional friends, family and colleagues in Australia, China,
Indonesia, Japan, Singapore,
Taiwan, and the USA
