DVD of Arthur’s 1996 retirement party and 2006 Celebration of Life party

Dean Sensui, a good friend of the Chiu family, was kind enough to tape the Celebration of Life party that was held on March 9, 2006.  While Dean was rummaging around his belongings, he happened to find his tape of Arthur’s 1996 retirement party.  Should you wish to have DVD’s of the parties, please send an email with your snail mail address to Arthur’s favorite son at greg@springonion.org.  (Added August 27, 2006)

The night of January 27, 2006

Katherine, Vicky and Greg received this description of the events of the night of Friday, January 27, 2006 from Beverly Ishii-Nakayama.  The family discussed its contents and decided that you, as Arthur’s `ohana, should be able to share—if you want to—Bev’s reflections of Arthur’s stroke and her impression of Arthur.  Thank-you, Bev, for allowing us to share your words with the rest of Arthur’s family.

Dr. Arthur N. L. Chiu Endowed Scholarship in Civil Engineering at the University of Hawaii

Arthur’s ideals are perpetuated through those whose lives he touched and also through the Dr. Arthur N. L. Chiu Endowed Scholarship in Civil Engineering; a scholarship for undergraduate students.  Arthur was extremely excited and humbled by the honor conveyed upon him by his friends and former students who established the scholarship in December 2005.  The scholarship provides the opportunity for future generations of students to learn and hopefully benefit from his ideals and principles.  Malamalama, the University of Hawaii magazine, has an article about the scholarship, and the University of Hawaii Foundation has made on-line donations possible (program:  “UHM—College of Engineering, accounts:  “Dr. Chiu Scholarship in Civil Engineering”).  For additional information on the scholarship, please contact Kerri Van Duyne at (voice) (+1) 808 956 2299 or (email) kerri.vanduyne@uhf.hawaii.edu.

Emeritus Professor Arthur N. L. Chiu Memorial Endowment

In September 1996, Arthur having officially retired in June 1995, a former student established an endowment so that Arthur could continue “…academic, scholarly and technical activities, including travel, related to civil engineering particularly in regard to mitigating damage caused by natural disasters.”  The endowment has been augmented by Arthur’s 1996 retirement party (where the endowment was first announced), and over the years by the Structural Engineers Association of Hawaii and others.  Upon Arthur’s death, the purpose of the endowment changed to fund, in priority:  1) scholarships for Hawaii graduate students in structural engineering; 2) workshops/seminars by professional engineers, preferably in conjunction with annual conventions of the Structural Engineers Association of Hawaii or the Hawaii Section, American Society of Civil Engineers; and, 3) grants to invite distinguished visiting lecturers/professors.  The endowment is in the process of being changed from Arthur’s personal use to the posthumous uses.
